Cable lock driver

Drives the lock of a Type 2 charge socket from the charge controller's lock command, with position feedback. Reserve capacitors keep enough energy on board to release the lock after a power failure, so a car is never held on a dead charger.

What it is

A small driver board between the charge controller and the lock of a Type 2 charge socket. The EVSE-C-3x32A gives the lock command; the cable lock driver turns it into a motor drive in the right direction, reads back whether the lock is open or closed and reports that to the controller.

The board stores energy in three reserve capacitors. If the supply fails while a cable is locked in, there is still enough energy to release the lock, so the car is never held on a charger without power.

Installation

  1. Connect P1 to the lock port of the charge controller with the 3-wire lead (lock signal, +12 V, GND).
  2. Connect the socket’s lock actuator to J3: the drive wires and the position-feedback wires.
  3. Fit the board by its edges, with 4 mm free below it and 20 mm free above P1 and J3.
  4. Make sure CP disconnect on the lock port is off (bit 3 of the settings register 0x0204).

Shipped in limited quantities. Each type of socket lock is tested with the driver first, so tell us which socket you use when you order.

The CAD and drawings give the outline and the keep-out areas for fitting it in an enclosure.

Questions

Does it work with my socket's lock?

Probably, but lock actuators differ in drive time, current and feedback. We test every locking mechanism with the driver before we supply it for that socket. Tell us which socket and lock you use via the contact page.

Do I need it with a fixed charging cable?

No. A fixed cable cannot be pulled out of the charger, so there is nothing to lock. The cable lock driver is for chargers with a Type 2 socket.

Can I use the lock port for CP disconnect at the same time?

No. The charge controller's lock port is used either for the cable lock or for CP disconnect (EV wake-up), set by bit 3 of the settings (0x0204). With a cable lock fitted, keep that bit off. Registers 0x0010, 0x0015 and 0x0016 return 0xFFFF when the port is set to CP disconnect.

What happens during a power failure?

The reserve capacitors hold enough energy to drive the lock open once more, so the cable can be removed.
